Meet the Memory Care Director at Clarendale Arcadia
At Clarendale Arcadia, the commitment to providing exceptional memory care services is not just a profession but also a deeply rooted passion. Kimberly Revans, Memory Care Director, shares her journey, insights, and the distinctive approach that sets Clarendale Arcadia apart from others in the realm of memory care.
A Journey of Compassion and Advocacy
Kimberly's journey in memory care began nearly two decades ago in a skilled nursing community. It was there, providing personal care to clients, that she discovered her calling.
"Providing personal care to my clients opened my eyes and my heart to what became my passion. I love being an advocate for people with dementia. I am their voice when they can't speak or express themselves. I am their emotional blanket when they need to be embraced. I enjoy making them smile and laugh,” said Kimberly.
For Kimberly, memory care is more than just a job; it's a calling. “Every day, I try to make a positive difference in the lives that I touch for residents, families and peers,” she said.
Clarendale Arcadia's Personalized Approach
What sets Clarendale Arcadia's memory care program apart? According to Kimberly, "Clarendale Arcadia's memory care program sets us apart from others by distinguishing itself through the personalized approach. We believe that every resident living with dementia deserves a purposeful life. We provide care with dignity and respect,” she explained.
"We have a 24-hour day, where we look at someone as an individual, and we live in their world,” she continued.
Creating Personalized Care Plans
Kimberly and her team meticulously craft personalized care plans for residents with memory loss. "Our team starts by doing the first initial assessment on individualized care plans by learning about our residents and their individual needs and preferences along with collecting a life history to understand each person's unique story,” Kimberly shared.
This individualized approach ensures that residents receive tailored care that honors their identity and maximizes their well-being.
Activities and Therapies for Cognitive Function
Kimberly discussed the myriad of activities and therapies that are available for residents. “Our program offers a diverse range of activities, including music therapy, physical exercises, art, reminiscing, watching documentaries, baking classes, brain busters, aromatherapy, and excursions all geared toward supporting cognitive function and overall well-being,” she said.
The Role of Families
When a senior joins a memory care community, their loved ones are often a significant factor in that decision. Kimberly explains that helping them rediscover their roles in their loved ones’ lives is an important step.
"The family members’ roles are to come and support their loved ones," Kimberly emphasized. "We encourage families to go back to their natural roles, where they can enjoy being their daughter, son, spouse or granddaughter."
Clarendale Arcadia provides resources, including educational materials and support groups, to assist families in navigating the challenges of caring for loved ones with memory loss. Kimberly said, “Families have access to our educational materials at our resource library, and there are family support groups to assist them with any questions of the disease process.”
Safety, Security, and Independence
At Clarendale Arcadia, resident safety is paramount. “We ensure safety and security by assessing our common spaces with daily safety walks,” Kimberly said. “We monitor residents’ surroundings for any potential endangerment. If they are performing an activity that is not putting others or themselves in harm, we will observe them with no disruptions.”
Measuring Success
When asked about measuring the success of memory care at Clarendale Arcadia, Kimberly explained, "We measure our success by the well-being of the residents. When a resident participates in daily activities, this promotes their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive well-being.” She continued, “We also consider family satisfaction and participation in their loved ones’ care plans."
Memorable Moments
"I have a resident who was a professional basketball coach," Kimberly shared. "One of our staff members is a high school coach. We took the resident to one of the games. He got to sit on the bench with the players. The resident has a smile from one ear to the other. It brought him enjoyable memories of being a basketball coach."
Advice for Families
Kimberly advises families considering memory care for their loved ones to observe the culture and environment of the community. “Is the staff engaging with the residents? Are the residents having fun, smiling, laughing? Do you feel that homelike feeling? Ask to see the activity calendar and what they have to offer. Don’t overwhelm yourself with a bunch of communities," she suggested.
Clarendale Arcadia's memory care program, under Revans' leadership, exemplifies excellence, compassion, and dedication. With a personalized approach, engaging activities, and a commitment to resident well-being, Clarendale Arcadia ensures that seniors living with memory loss receive the exceptional care and support they deserve.
